Hon. Selekebina Saboh, the House of Representatives Candidate for Sagbama/ Ekeremor Federal Constituency under the National Democratic Congress, NDC marked his 53rd birthday celebration with Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Bayelsa State, donating food items and cash gifts to the group.
Saboh said celebrating with PWDs has become his way of reaching and supporting the less privileged in society.
“This year I am donating 100 bags of rice, over 200 cartons of Indomie noodles, and cash gifts to the disabled. I am not doing this for political reasons, but as my own humble way to touch lives,” he said.
The philanthropist noted that the gesture is deviod of his political aspirations to represent the people of Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency but a way of giving back to society has been a lifelong commitment for him, recalling that he started empowering people at the age of 20.
” I know many persons may read meaning to this gesture but let me be plain to all. It’s never because of elections or to get the praises of people but my humble and heartfelt way to rendering succour to those who are the downtrodden in the society. A lifestyle I cultivated many years ago”.
According to him, his interventions over the years include paying monthly stipends to the elderly in his local government area, providing engine boats to youths, building houses for indigent persons, paying school fees for students, awarding scholarships, and empowering youths with vocational skills and women with business grants.
“I will continue to offer my humble support to impact society and make life easier for different people. I have been empowering persons since I was 20 years old and by the grace of God, I will continue to do so,” Saboh added.
The Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Bayelsa State Chapter, Mr. Mayor Doutiminariye, while receiving the items on behalf of members commended Hon. Selves Saboh for his consistent show of love and support for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the state.
According to him, Saboh has over the years dedicated his birthday to celebrating with PWDs, noting that this year’s celebration on September 24, 2024, marks the fourth consecutive time he has fêted them.
He said Saboh’s gesture was not politically motivated but borne out of genuine concern for the welfare of PWDs.
“This is not the first time. He is not doing it for political reasons; he has persons with disabilities at heart. This is the fourth time he has been celebrating with us,” Doutiminariye said.
The chairman added that beyond birthday celebrations, Saboh has consistently responded to the needs of PWDs whenever called upon.
“He does not only celebrate on his birthday. When persons with disabilities call upon him, his doors are always open. He pays house rents, caters for hospital bills, pays surgical fees, pays school fees for persons with disabilities, and offers financial assistance,” he stated.
He called on other well-meaning Bayelsans to emulate Saboh’s philanthropic character to make Bayelsa a better place for all, while praying for God’s elevation, long life and prosperity upon him.
When asked about Saboh’s aspiration to contest for the House of Representatives, Doutiminariye said his office remains apolitical but acknowledged Saboh’s humanitarian track record as deserving of greater responsibility.
“As Chairman of JONAPWD, my position is apolitical, but judging by his good works to humanity, this is someone that should be given power. We will continue to support him and we pray that whatever he does, God will always provide him with the grace to succeed,” he said.
Also speaking, Mr Doubara Okomuku a chieftain of the NDC and the House of Representatives Candidate for Kolokuna-Opokum/Yenagoa Federal Constituency and Pastor Mieye Moses described the celebrant as a good man whose entire life reflects passion to impact society.
